I used to visit the Obon Festival in San Jose, CA every year and decided that someday I would like to learn the dance. It was so beautiful and graceful. It's been quite a few years since I studied ballet and I miss dancing. I missed your festival this year. I used to remember it being sometime in June when I was in California.

Event was held on saturday, november 19. Before an audience of 80 persons, four scions of Sawtelle merchants talked about the stores. Yuki Sakurai talked about her father starting Sawtelle Food Market and how he liked the store. Hank Iwamoto told about how his dad, a USC graduate, through coincidence came to Sawtelle to open Safe and Save Market. Hank also talked about the harsh discrimination faced by him as he grew up in Colorado and Oklahoma. Ben Toshiyuki told of his father's drug store in preWWII downtown Little Tokyo and eventually gravitated to Sawtelle where Ben talked about four generations of Toshiyuki pharmacists. Maybe a fifth generation now. And Henry Yamaguchi talked about his parents running the Yamaguchi variety store where parents and adults shopped. Until 2010, Yamaguchi's was a popular merchandising house when it was sold to Manny Salzman. He continues to offer the Yamaguchi motif. After Q & A moderated by Jack Fujimoto, audience members suggested future Sawtelle Stories Forum topics.

Took my child to one of Andrea Iwamoto Taiko Class, she was a witch..... Not a good teacher at all. Teaches kids to fear and hate taiko rather to love and appriciate it. Needs anger management.

Can you please put the city and state at the beginning of each event? For example, one event lists "Sushi & Stroll - Summer Walks at the Morikami". You have to waste time to click on it, and scroll down to find that the event is in Delray, Florida, nowhere near where I live in L.A.

Rather than drive downtown and park, I suggest taking MetroRail or MetroLink. The MetroRail Gold Line has a stop right in Little Tokyo, and it connects with the Metro Red Line and with MetroLink trains at Union Station. A number of the MetroRail stations have free parking, and the day pass is only $5 per person (less for seniors).
